Can you refinish Hitchcock Furniture with a stencil under the finish without damaging the painted stencil?

I have several pieces of hitchcock furniture (dresser, dining room table, coffee table, end tables) which could use a bit of sprucing up on the table tops. All pieces have tabletop stenciling. A refinisher I have spoken to has said they can sand and re-laquer with no damage to the stencil and wanted to double check here to see if that is true.
