There I was, staring silently out into the endless waters of the ocean. Now a day’s that’s all I ever seemed to find myself doing. It hadn’t always been like this, but something inside me craves the wind against my hair, the chilled current of air against my fresh face, the strong scent of salt in my nose and the pallid blue water seeming to never end. I was so different now, finally beginning to realise the true me, I’d never known who I really was but I was starting to become conscious. I propped myself up, leaning back against my elbows and gazed out into the horizon, cherishing the last few moments of the bright, glazing sun before It slipped soundlessly out of view. The strong wind whipped across my face and I felt goose-pimples begin to form on my naked arms and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I slipped on my jacket, zipped it up and reluctantly got to my feet, taking one last gaze at the beautiful waves as they crashed with such force into the depths of my paradise before forming a bubbling white froth and disappearing only for the same cycle to be repeated only seconds later. I turned and began to cross the beach toward my small thatched cottage only a mile or so down the road.

I continued to walk, soon reaching the long, steep driveway, the small grey steps that looked as if they could crumble underneath your feet at any moment and the long stretched porch. I took a deep breath before pushing down on the silver handle and reluctantly stepping into the sweet smell of home, the all too familiar white washed walls, sturdy wooden beams and the old oak furniture. My mother stood in the arch way, leaning against the wooden pillar. She smiled sweetly at me, her lips turning up slightly at the corners, bringing out the creases in her cheeks. If I hadn’t of known where to look I wouldn’t have seen the uncertainty behind her smile, I wouldn’t have noticed the flash of hopelessness and confusion behind those warm teak eyes and I wouldn’t of realised how she strained to search for reasons as to why I had been acting strangely recently, but the truth was, I hadn’t figured that out yet.
